As a child, I loved to find and eat a ripe maypop. I'm not sure I liked the taste so much as I liked the fun of looking for the fruit. There are a lot of varieties of passion vine that are grown around the world, but the one that is most common in the wilds of Alabama is pasiflora incarnata.
In southern folk medicine, it was used to calm the nerves and to promote sound sleep. Some people use the fruit to make a tart drink similar to lemonade.
The plant is a host for gulf fritillary butterflies, so if you run across a maypop in late summer, look for the tiny, orange caterpillars munching on the leaves. There is a good chance you'll see a few adult butterflies flitting around as well. This is an easy and fun plant to cultivate in the garden. It will reward you with beautifully complex flowers, a tart fruit and some entertainment as you watch the life cycle of the gulf fritillaries.
